I just recently graduated with a masters degree from University of Michigan Dearborn (undergrad from University of Michigan Ann Arbor).
I studied mostly software engineering and did some work in Video Games, but haven't had much luck getting my foot in the door there, and am reconsidering if I want to dedicate my life to entertainment.
I worked for two years at the University of Michigan hospital doing C++ programming.
How possible would it be for me to get an internship of some sort with the skills I have? Lets say also that I learned some FTK on my own (no certification) by watching some videos, and seems like its a rather simple tool to use (I already have extensive programming knowledge, 14+ languages so things like regular expressions are a snap)
Also I have been studying cloud computing for my masters degree, which is something that will probably be very useful in the near future as cloud computing becomes more widely used.
Having the ability to run the tools is only a very small fraction of the knowledge required for CF.
If you had a background in network/information security, incident response or similar and some criminal justice you might have an advantage in the general world of CF. I think based on your programming background you would have better success looking in the subset of CF often called malware analysis.
Internships are very rare in CF. By the time you passed background, signed enough non-disclosure agreements, etc. your internship would be over.
My suggestion, do a search for the keyword malware on Dice dot com.
