If you don't password protect your network, anyone can logon and brows the internet through your router, and thus have communications coming from the same WAN IP address as your home computer. To the ISP (and the police), you and anyone else using your router will all appear to be one computer.
Now that's why I password protect my network. But what about people who don't, and leave it open (either intentionally as a wireless access point/hotspot, or unintentionally by someone who doesn't know how to properly set up their router and so use all default settings)? Do they have liability if someone else uses it then for illegal activities, such as hack1ng, child p0rn, or copyright infringement? If so, what is the scope of that liability, and what are the punishments for failing at that liability?
