I have been lurking around here for a while and have seen the various answers to these questions but I still feel like I could use a sounding board if you will indulge me.
I'm 24 years old about to graduate with a BS in Computer Science emphasis of Information Assurance from a 4 year university. I also have 5 years of IT experience (desktop support, server admin, helpdesk, etc). I have no official forensics experience but I have been working with the tools and test data in the labs on campus and at home trying to learn all I can.
Heres the question: My goal is to become an investigator (preferably law enforcement, but I'm not really aware of what the private sector is like). Should I be looking for a law enforcement job and then try to work my way into a forensics job? Or can I feel comfortable applying for an entry level forensics job? I have talked to a lot of people in the department and it doesn't seem like many people have gone on to work in the forensics field so I was hoping y'all could give me a little guidance of what I should expect and work toward after I walk across that stage in May. Thank you for taking the time to read this and I appreciate any feedback.
