Learn IT fundamentals

Learn platform specifics

Learn forensics (local law and other basics etc.)

At that point you should reasonably well prepared to ask the right questions at least.

As you are not asking the right questions, ... you have to start over again. In the meantime, hand the case over to someone who has the necessary competence.
