You’re investigating an internal policy violation when you find an e-mail about a serious assault for which a police report needs to be filed. What should be done?

You inform HR to cover your own back. Then you take it from there. It may involve interviewing the person (or persons) involved. It's up to the victim to contact the police (they may not want the police to get involved) but it is important for your own ethics and professionalism that you have reported it to someone and that there is an audit trail.
